How Often Should You Use an Infrared Sauna?

If you’re new to infrared saunas, a cautious approach is to begin with one weekly visit. Start with 5 to 10 minutes, stay hydrated, skip it when you’re unwell, and leave immediately if you feel dizzy, weak, nauseous, or short of breath.

There’s no medically established schedule that suits every healthy adult. Your ideal routine will depend on experience, health, and how comfortably you handle heat. The useful approach is to build gradually.

Think steady habit, not a sweaty endurance event.

A Practical Weekly Sauna Schedule

Begin with one visit. Notice how you feel during the session and later that day before deciding whether another weekly session feels manageable.

A simple progression looks like this:

Your first few visits: Start with one session a week and keep your first visit brief.

Once you feel comfortable: Move to one or two sessions a week.

For a regular routine: Two or three weekly sessions may suit healthy, experienced users.

At the higher end: Three or four sessions a week may be tolerable for some people, provided they’re well hydrated and comfortable with the heat. Cleveland Clinic recommends limiting visits to three or four times a week.

Every day: Daily use isn’t essential for general wellness and won’t suit everyone.

Start Slowly and Build From There

Your first visit isn’t the time to test your heroic side. Choose a comfortable temperature and focus on learning how the heat feels. That gives you a clear starting point for later visits.

Fresh Treatments offers 45-minute sessions. Beginners typically start at 5 to 10 minutes and experienced users keep sessions under 30 minutes. Ask the team how to adjust your first visit, and always stop the session if you feel unwell.

Change one thing at a time. Add a little time, adjust the temperature, or add a weekly visit. Don’t push all three at once.

What Changes the Right Frequency?

Two people can follow the same schedule and have very different experiences. Your ideal number of visits can be affected by:

  • Previous experience with saunas
  • The temperature and length of each visit
  • How much water you’ve had that day
  • Exercise before the appointment
  • Alcohol use
  • Medication that affects blood pressure or fluid balance
  • Health conditions that make heat harder to tolerate
  • Melbourne’s weather, especially during a hot spell

How you feel afterwards can help you decide whether you need more time between visits. If the routine consistently feels too demanding, allow more recovery time between bookings. Sweating buckets isn’t proof of a better result. Sometimes it really just means you’ve sweated buckets, that’s it.

Match the Routine to Your Wellness Goals

For relaxation, one or two well-timed visits may beat packing several into a busy week. Book when you can cool down afterwards.

If you’re active, sauna warmth may feel soothing after exercise and help tight muscles relax. It shouldn’t replace rest, injury care, food, or fluids. Consider how demanding your workout has been before adding a sauna session.

For general wellbeing, infrared sauna sessions may help ease sore muscles and provide a calm space to relax after exercise or a busy week. Mayo Clinic’s infrared sauna research also notes that studies have explored possible benefits for concerns such as high blood pressure, headaches, and arthritis, although larger and more precise studies are still needed. Sauna use can complement a balanced wellness routine and appropriate medical care.

Know When to Stop or Skip a Visit

Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, weak, confused, or short of breath. If you develop a headache, leave the sauna, cool down, and drink some water. Seek urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe confusion, or symptoms that don’t improve.

Skip your booking if you’re feverish, dehydrated, acutely unwell, or contagious. Heat won’t cure a cold or flu, and sharing germs is a fairly grim wellness ritual.

Seek medical advice before booking if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have cardiovascular or blood pressure concerns
  • Experience heat intolerance
  • Take medicines that affect blood pressure or fluid balance

Make Each Session More Comfortable

A little preparation goes a long way:

  • Drink water before arriving.
  • Avoid alcohol around your booking.
  • Don’t arrive dehydrated after hard exercise or a very hot day.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to change.
  • Leave early if the heat stops feeling pleasant.
  • Cool down gradually and drink water afterwards.

Fresh Treatments provides drinking water, fresh towels, and a private shower, so you can cool down and freshen up before heading back out onto Sydney Road.

Build a Healthy Routine With Fresh Treatments

At Fresh Treatments, you’ll have a private room with a Sunlighten mPulse Believe sauna, complete with near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths. Red light therapy is included, too. Choose from six preset wellness programs, visit solo, or bring one or two friends. Quiet reset or social sweat, both work.

New to infrared heat? Start with a casual session and see how it feels. If the sauna earns a regular spot in your week, packs of five or ten make future bookings easier. Our team can also help you organise a practical schedule, whether that’s weekly, twice monthly, or simply whenever life gives you a spare hour.

We’ve been bringing modern wellness services to Sydney Road in Brunswick since 2019, just minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. Alongside our infrared sauna, you’ll find:

  • NormaTec compression and cryotherapy: Separate options for active clients building a broader recovery routine.
  • Body analysis: Useful for tracking body composition, including muscle, body fat, and water content.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: A standalone wellness service available at our Brunswick clinic.
